Why Is My Cat Hiding? Common Causes and When to Worry

· 3 min read

Cats are masters of stealth, and some hiding is perfectly normal. But when a social cat suddenly starts hiding, or when hiding comes with other symptoms, it can be a sign of trouble.

Normal Hiding vs. Concerning Hiding

Normal: Your cat has a favorite spot under the bed or in a closet. They come out for meals, play, and affection on their terms. This is just cat behavior.

Concerning: Your cat suddenly starts hiding when they normally don't, refuses to come out for food or treats, or hides in unusual spots they've never used before.

Common Causes of Hiding

Stress or Environmental Changes

Cats are creatures of habit. Common stressors include:

  • New people or pets in the home
  • Moving to a new house
  • Construction noise or visitors
  • Changes in routine

Pain or Illness

Cats instinctively hide when they're feeling unwell. This is a survival behavior — in the wild, showing weakness makes them vulnerable. Watch for hiding combined with:

  • Not eating or drinking
  • Changes in litter box habits
  • Vocalizing more or less than usual
  • Aggression when touched

Fear

Loud noises (thunderstorms, fireworks), other animals, or a scary experience can send a cat into hiding. This usually resolves once the stimulus is gone.

When to See a Vet

Contact a veterinarian if your cat:

  • Has been hiding for more than 24 hours and won't eat
  • Shows any signs of pain (crying, aggression when touched)
  • Has changes in litter box habits along with hiding
  • Is hiding plus vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing

How to Help a Hiding Cat

  1. Don't force them out — this increases stress
  2. Place food, water, and a litter box near their hiding spot
  3. Speak softly and let them come to you
  4. Keep the environment calm and quiet
  5. If stress-related, give them time to adjust (usually a few days)

If your cat's hiding behavior concerns you, a quick consult with a vet can help you determine whether it's behavioral or medical.
