Can Dogs Eat Onion?

No — onions are toxic to dogs. They contain compounds that destroy red blood cells, leading to a dangerous condition called hemolytic anemia.

Emergency

All forms of onion are toxic to dogs

Onions contain N-propyl disulfide and other organosulfur compounds that damage red blood cells. This applies to all varieties (white, yellow, red, green) and all forms (raw, cooked, dried, powdered). Garlic, leeks, shallots, and chives from the same Allium family carry similar risks.

How urgent is this?

Emergency

Go to the ER now

  • Dog ate a significant amount of onion (more than 0.5% of body weight)
  • Pale or yellowish gums
  • Dark red or brown urine
  • Weakness, collapse, or rapid breathing
Urgent

See a vet within 24 hours

  • Dog ate cooked food containing onion (soup, stir-fry, stuffing)
  • Repeated small exposures over several days
  • Vomiting or diarrhea after eating onion
  • Decreased appetite or lethargy within 1-3 days
Monitor

Watch at home, call if it worsens

  • Dog ate a tiny piece of onion and is a large breed
  • Licked a plate with trace onion residue
  • Acting completely normal after minimal exposure

What to Do Right Now

Onion toxicity can be delayed — symptoms may not appear for 1-5 days. Don't wait for signs of anemia.

  • Call your vet, especially if your dog ate more than a small taste
  • Note the type and amount of onion — onion powder is more concentrated than raw
  • Your vet may induce vomiting if ingestion was recent
  • Blood work may be needed to check for anemia over the next few days
  • Watch for pale gums, dark urine, lethargy, or rapid breathing

Common Questions

Can a small amount of onion hurt my dog?
A tiny lick or trace amount is unlikely to cause serious problems, especially in larger dogs. However, the toxic dose is cumulative — repeated small exposures can add up. As a rule, no amount of onion should be intentionally given to dogs.
Is cooked onion less toxic than raw?
No. Cooking does not destroy the toxic compounds in onions. Onion soup, onion rings, caramelized onions, and foods seasoned with onion powder are all dangerous. Onion powder is actually more concentrated and potentially more toxic per gram.
Are garlic and other alliums toxic too?
Yes. Garlic, leeks, shallots, and chives are all part of the Allium family and contain similar toxic compounds. Garlic is actually considered 3-5 times more potent than onion on a per-weight basis, though all should be avoided.
