My Dog Ate Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. The severity depends on the type of chocolate, how much was eaten, and your dog's size.

Emergency

This can be life-threatening

Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous. If your dog ate any amount of dark or baking chocolate, contact a vet or animal poison control immediately.

Common Questions

How much chocolate is dangerous for a dog?
It depends on the type. Dark and baking chocolate are the most toxic — as little as 0.1 oz per pound of body weight can be dangerous. Milk chocolate is less toxic but still risky at about 1 oz per pound. White chocolate has very little theobromine but can still cause pancreatitis from the fat content.
Should I make my dog vomit?
Do NOT induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. Inducing vomiting incorrectly can cause more harm, especially if your dog is already showing neurological symptoms like seizures.
My dog seems fine — should I still call the vet?
Yes. Symptoms of chocolate toxicity can take 6 to 12 hours to appear, and by that time the theobromine is already being absorbed. Early treatment is much more effective than waiting for symptoms.
